Chapter 188
During the morning meeting, after learning about Director Chen's deeds, everyone turned their attention to Chen Xue.
Li couldn't help but praise, "Chen Xue, even though your father failed the family, he was a good doctor."
Chen Xue remained silent, feeling somewhat surprised. She couldn't connect the cold and distant father from her childhood with the kind and professional doctor she was hearing about now.
Fang Rui analyzed, "Although Director Chen's character seems impeccable, Chen Shu once said that this was her faith. So, their motive for doing this must not have been for personal gain but for some higher ideal. Director Chen is still a suspect."
"The Star Home case also involves illegal drug trials. When we investigated, we only traced it back to a shell company," Chen Xue added. "Could these two cases be connected? Could the people behind the shell company have instructed Chen Shu to do this?"
Zhang sighed, "What if we investigate further and only end up tracing it back to another shell company?"
Fang Rui decided to look into the relationship between Chen Shu and Bai Jing.
There were two coffee shops in Jiangzhou City called "Left Bank Coffee," but both owners confirmed that Chen Shu and Bai Jing had never visited their stores.
Chen Shu's chat records showed that half a month ago, they had agreed to meet at a coffee shop. However, surveillance footage from both stores over the past two months showed no sign of them, and there were no payment records from Chen Shu's account.
Fang Rui speculated, "Could 'Left Bank Coffee' not be an actual coffee shop but a code name they agreed upon?"
Zhang agreed, "That's possible! So why did Bai Jing and Chen Shu meet so often? Could Bai Jing have been assigning tasks to Chen Shu? If so, Bai Jing might be a liaison and could know a lot of things."
To avoid alerting anyone, they decided not to bring Bai Jing in for questioning but to investigate her privately instead.
Bai Jing's personal records were straightforward. She graduated from Jiangzhou University with a degree in psychology, spent over a year unemployed after graduation, then worked as a social worker in the Ziweili Residential Area for half a year before returning to Jiangzhou University to pursue a master's degree in psychology.
The only notable detail was that her father was the renowned psychologist, Professor Bai.
Fang Rui and Mu Mian drove to the "Lingxi" Psychological Clinic where Bai Jing worked.
On the way, Mu Mian said, "There are suspicious points about Chen Shu's death. Although we detected rat poison on her clothes, there was no saliva on her collar. If she had intended to commit suicide by ingesting poison from her collar, the most convenient method would have been to put the collar directly in her mouth. That would have left saliva traces."
"Could she have soaked the collar in a cup of water?"n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
"There was no rat poison detected in the cup or the lunchbox. Also, I checked the surveillance footage, and her collar wasn't wet."
Fang Rui frowned, "That's strange. If she didn't ingest the poison from her collar, she was likely poisoned by someone else. But there was no poison detected on the utensils. So how did she get poisoned?"
"Exactly, it's very puzzling. If she committed suicide, why didn't she just ingest the poison directly from her collar? If she was poisoned by someone else, how did the killer manage to poison her in the police station, and why was rat poison found on her collar?"
"Could it be that some of the poison dripped onto her collar when she drank it?"
Mu Mian frowned, "But no poison was detected in the cup or on the utensils."
Fang Rui suspected that someone within their team might have tampered with the evidence.
Mu Mian worried, "If Bai Jing is one of the masterminds, could she harm my sister?"
Fang Rui replied, "She likely approached your sister with a purpose. Your parents were scientists. Could your sister have their research materials? Maybe that's why Bai Jing got close to her."
Mu Mian said, "It's possible. My father's last research project was on Alzheimer's disease. But my seniors said that since the foundational paper in the Alzheimer's field was fraudulent, all research based on those findings was flawed. Why would Bai Jing want a bunch of flawed research data?"
Fang Rui felt that Mu Mian wasn't entirely clear about her parents' work.
When they arrived at the "Lingxi" Psychological Clinic, the receptionist recognized Mu Mian and greeted her warmly, "Mu Mian, are you here to see your sister?"
"Yes," Mu Mian replied.
The receptionist noticed Fang Rui and was slightly surprised, "Is this your friend?"
Mu Mian corrected her, "This is my boyfriend, Fang Rui."
Fang Rui greeted her, "Hello."
"Hello. Mu Mian, I didn't know you had a boyfriend, and such a handsome one too!"
The receptionist was surprised. It was rare for someone with autism to form normal intimate relationships, so she hadn't expected Mu Mian to have a boyfriend. Still, she was happy for her.
"Thank you. Sister Feng, I hope you find a boyfriend soon too."
"...I'll try!" the receptionist said, "Please wait in the rest area."
"Alright."
The receptionist brought them water.
Mu Mian asked, "Has Bai Jing been coming to the clinic often recently?"
At the mention of Bai Jing, the receptionist's expression changed, and she said with annoyance, "Yes, she comes often. It's so annoying."
"You don't like her?"
"She's a scheming, manipulative woman who has driven away several counseling assistants. I don't like her much," the receptionist, a straightforward girl, complained. "You should avoid her. She might seem nice, but she's extremely jealous and can't stand anyone doing better than her."
"Did Chen Shu ever come to see her?"
"Who's Chen Shu? We don't have a client by that name!"
Fang Rui asked, "Does Bai Jing usually behave unusually?"
"Unusual behavior? Not really. She just likes to play mind games. But she's clever, and the therapists like her. Our boss especially values her..."
The receptionist lowered her voice, "But your sister is smart. She saw through Bai Jing's act and no longer lets her be an assistant."
"Sister Feng."
Hearing Bai Jing's voice behind her, the receptionist was startled. She awkwardly turned to face Bai Jing.
Bai Jing smiled at her, "What were you talking about? I heard my name."
"Nothing... nothing! Oh, I have some work to do. I'll head back now," the receptionist said before scurrying away.
Bai Jing smiled at Mu Mian, "Mu Mian, it's been a while." She then looked at Fang Rui, "Officer Fang, long time no see!"
Mu Mian and Fang Rui ignored her. First, they didn't want Bai Jing to know they were investigating her, and second, if Bai Jing was indeed involved in the case, they wouldn't get any useful information from her.
Seeing that Fang Rui and Mu Mian were ignoring her, Bai Jing's smile faded. "Aren't you here to see me?"
It seemed Bai Jing already knew the police were investigating her. Fang Rui decided to be direct, "Do you know Chen Shu?"
"Yes, we were good friends. I was deeply saddened by her death. However, she made mistakes and had to face the consequences."
Fang Rui asked, "Chen Shu didn't commit suicide. She was killed by your people, wasn't she?"
Bai Jing didn't answer.
"Is the Star Home incident also connected to you?"
"Officer Fang, you've already solved the case, caught the culprit, and established the motive and process. Just close the case. Let it end here," Bai Jing said.
"Will you stop your criminal activities?"
Bai Jing remained silent.
"You won't stop. Then our investigation won't stop either."
Fang Rui and Mu Mian were seated, while Bai Jing stood, looking down at them with a condescending air. "I've given you a friendly warning. If you don't accept it, then I can only wish you good luck."
Mu Mian asked, "If we continue investigating, what will you do?"
Bai Jing was momentarily taken aback. "Why should I tell you?"
"If you don't tell us the consequences, how can we decide whether to continue investigating?" Mu Mian looked at her sincerely.
"Damn autistic person!" Bai Jing snorted coldly and turned to leave.
