Chapter 187
Mu Mian performed an autopsy on Chen Shu's body. There were no obvious external injuries or needle marks on Chen Shu, leading to the preliminary conclusion that she had indeed died from poisoning.
Chen Xue said, "Mian Mian, don't you think Chen Shu's condition resembles Lin Qianjie's? Could she have also died from ingesting tetramine?"
Mu Mian agreed, "I also suspect that tetramine is what poisoned her."n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
However, Mu Mian was puzzled. How could it be tetramine?
Chen Xue wondered, "Before she entered the interrogation room, a female officer had already searched her and found no poison on her. So how did she obtain the poison and ingest it to commit suicide? The food she ate inside was also provided by our department, so it couldn’t have been tampered with."
Chen Xue picked up Chen Shu's clothes and examined them carefully. No suspicious items were found in the pockets. She then untied the hair tie from Chen Shu's hair. The hair tie was made of cotton and showed no traces of hidden poison.
Mu Mian said, "There are many ways to hide poison, such as concealing it under fingernails, in the ears, or swallowing it in a capsule to delay its effects. Another method is to soak clothing in a poison solution..."
Chen Xue nodded, "That makes sense. We need to thoroughly inspect all of Chen Shu's belongings to see if there are any traces of poison."
It would take time for the toxicology report to come out. Only after receiving the results would Mu Mian know exactly what poison Chen Shu had ingested and how she had been poisoned.
Chen Shu had eaten lunch and drank two glasses of water at the police station. The disposable utensils she used, which were still in the trash and hadn’t been discarded, were also sent for toxicology testing.
The next day, the toxicology results came out. As Mu Mian and the others had suspected, the poison that killed Chen Shu was tetramine. Traces of tetramine were detected on the collar of the clothes Chen Shu had worn that day; no poison was found on any other items.
"How could it be tetramine?" Zhang wondered. "It’s not easy to obtain. Why would Chen Shu use such a poison to commit suicide?"
Fang Rui also found it strange, "Chen Shu had access to so many controlled substances from the hospital. Why didn’t she steal something from there to use for suicide instead of buying tetramine?"
Mu Mian speculated, "It’s possible because the drugs available in the hospital aren’t as lethal and could be easily treated. Tetramine, on the other hand, is highly toxic, and even a small amount can be fatal."
"Then how did she bring the poison in?"
Mu Mian explained, "We detected tetramine on her collar. If she really did commit suicide, it’s reasonable to assume she soaked her collar in a tetramine solution beforehand, allowing her to evade detection during the search."
Li questioned, "If she wanted to commit suicide, why didn’t she do it earlier? Why wait so long in the interrogation room? Why not kill herself before we arrested her? That way, we wouldn’t have been able to question her at all. The timing of her suicide is strange."
Chen Xue countered, "She didn’t know we had solid evidence against her. If our evidence had been insufficient, she might have walked free. But when she realized we had undeniable proof of her crimes and that she couldn’t talk her way out, she gave up completely."
Wang chimed in, "Chen Shu once told me that people should live freely. She probably didn’t want to be imprisoned, so she chose to take her own life."
Zhang added, "The prison guards also mentioned that Chen Shu told them not to call for emergency help, as she was beyond saving. That suggests she did commit suicide."
Fang Rui still had doubts, "But how did she know we would arrest her at the hospital that day?"
"Could it be that she wore clothes soaked in poison every day? If she were arrested, she could use the tetramine to kill herself," Li speculated.
With Chen Shu dead, the only way forward was to investigate her social connections for potential clues.
The police examined Chen Shu’s bank accounts. Her transaction history was brief, with deposits only from her hospital salary and no suspicious income.
She had almost no savings, and no cash was found at her home. This suggested that Chen Shu likely wasn’t motivated by money in committing these acts.
Fang Rui and Zhang went to the hospital to speak with Director Chen, but the nurses informed them that Director Chen had gone out of town for an academic conference and wouldn’t return for a week.
Fang Rui managed to reach Director Chen by phone.
"Officer, what do you need from me?" Director Chen’s tone was impatient.
"Do you know Chen Shu?"
"Yes, she was a nurse in our department. Why?"
"She’s dead. As her family member, could you come to the police station to identify her body?"
Director Chen replied coldly, "Who told you I’m her family member? Just because we share the same surname doesn’t mean we’re related. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and run a DNA test to see if she’s my daughter."
"We found photos of you, Chen Shu, and her mother at her home. If you’re not related, why would those photos exist?"
"Those are just photos of me with patients and their families. Is there anything else? If not, I have work to attend to."
Before Fang Rui could respond, Director Chen hung up.
Zhang complained, "Director Chen is so irresponsible. Even if Chen Shu wasn’t his biological daughter, she was still his stepdaughter. How can he be so indifferent to her death? Could he have been the one who pushed Chen Shu to harm those patients? Now that Chen Shu’s dead, he’s quick to distance himself."
Fang Rui said, "Chen Shu couldn’t have carried out the drug experiments alone. Medical tests would have revealed abnormalities, so there must be an accomplice within the hospital."
Fang Rui wanted to investigate further, but the hospital was uncooperative. They refused to provide patient treatment records and even threatened to file a complaint against the police if they continued to "harass" their doctors and nurses.
Zhang sighed, "Could it be that the hospital collaborated directly with that medical institution, and Chen Shu was just a scapegoat?"
Fang Rui thought it unlikely that the hospital was directly involved, but he was certain there was an accomplice within the hospital.
Fang Rui investigated Director Chen’s bank accounts but found no unusual income. In fact, Director Chen’s account balance was only a few thousand yuan.
Upon further investigation, they discovered that while Director Chen earned a high income, he owned only an old unit-assigned apartment and had almost no savings.
He spent his money on helping patients, often covering medical expenses for rural patients and volunteering in impoverished areas. Director Chen was not only highly skilled in medicine but also had exceptional medical ethics.
